The Rostrum Essay Competition is organised every year by RostrumLegal to promote original legal writing and research work in the field of law. We are delighted to announce the fourth edition of the competition.

Are you passionate about Legal Research and Writing? If yes then put pen to paper and get ready to take part! There is no specific theme for this year’s completion. Participants can write on any topic of their interest from the field of law. We urge all the participants to be creative and innovative in how they express their arguments in the essay.

The competition has received an incredible response in the past three years, we have received 700+ abstracts and 240+ essays by participants from all around the world.

Who can participate?

The competition is open to all undergraduate law students and postgraduate law students pursuing Master of Laws or an equivalent masters degree in law.

Important Dates

October 25, 2016 – Last day for abstract submission by email. (Submit by 23:59 Indian Standard Time)

November 1, 2016 – Results: Release of abstract selection list. (16:00 Hrs. Indian Standard Time)

November 8, 2016 – Last day for online registration (Register by 23:59 Indian Standard Time)

December 20, 2016 – Last day for submission of essays by email. (Submit by 23:59 Indian Standard Time)

Awards and Prizes


1st Prize – Rs. 15,000/- Cash

2nd Prize – Rs. 10,000/- Cash

3rd Prize – Rs. 5,000/- Cash

Rank 4th to 10th – Rs. 1,000/- Cash for each participant.


Essay of all the participants ranked 1st to 10th will be published online in Rostrum’s Law Review, ISSN: 2321 – 3787.


All the participants submitting abstracts for the competition will receive a RostrumLegal gift voucher worth Rs. 2000 each.


Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all the students selected for the submission of essays for the competition.

Selection Criteria

The abstracts and essays will be selected keeping in mind the following criterion:

1. How dynamic, contemporary is the topic.
2. The quality of arguments made.
3. Referencing and citation of the legal authorities.
4. How focused the approach to discuss the issues in the essay.
5. Manner of organizing the content.

Submission Guidelines

Participants can write on ANY TOPIC ON LAW of their interest.

Co-Authorship is NOT allowed. Co-Authorship is now allowed up to 2 co-authors.

The abstract should not exceed 500 words.

The world limit for essay is 6000 words (Including Footnotes and References).

All the submissions shall be made in .doc or .docx format.

Further guidelines for citation and submission will be emailed to the selected participants after registration.

Registration and Fees

Participants whose abstracts are selected are required to register for the competition.

Registration can be done online by filling up the form and by online payment of registration fee.

The registration fee for this edition of competition is Rs. 1300/- (One Thousand Three Hundred Rupees Only).

Terms & Conditions

The promoter of this competition is RostrumLegal.

The eligibility criteria and the deadlines shall be strictly followed. The submissions not adhering to any of these shall be rejected without any explanation.

We follow a strict policy on Academic fairness and plagiarism. The essay and abstract must be original work of the author and must not have been previously published.

The author will retain the copyright of the work but agrees to grant the exclusive publication rights of the essay and the abstract to Rostrumlegal

The cash prizes will be disbursed in Indian National Rupees.

By entering, all entrants agree to abide by each and every term and condition. RostrumLegal reserves the right to withhold prizes for violation of any of the terms and conditions.

Entrants represent and warrant that their entry is the original work of the party named in the entry submission and that they have the full power and authority to enter the work in their own name.

The entrant agrees to indemnify RostrumLegal for any infringements of, for example, statutory or common-law copyright, or 3rd party proprietary rights, or any other loss resulting from a breach of these warranties.

Entries which contain, in the sole opinion of RostrumLegal, any material which is defamatory, obscene, illegal or inappropriate will be invalidated. Any misrepresentation or fraud will also invalidate the entry.

Winners may be required to submit valid identification and proof of qualification or status as student before receiving their prize.

Entrants agree to allow the free use of their name, likeness, and general location for publicity and news purposes during this and future promotions.

RostrumLegal reserves the right to withhold prizes for any invalidated entries. RostrumLegal accepts no responsibility for lost or delayed entries, data charges, or any other costs associated with entry, nor will it be responsible for technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind or lost or unavailable network connections that may limit or prevent the person from participating in the Competition.

Personal information collected will be used for RostrumLegal purposes only and managed in accordance with the Data Protection Law of India.

The organizers reserve the right to amend the rules of the competition at any point of time during the competition. Participants will be notified about the same by email. In the event of any dispute the decision of the organisers shall remain final.
